Celebration Series: The Songs of Gillian Welch & The Jayhawks
The Celebration Series celebrates singer/songwriters in our midst! Each month we honor a particular singer/songwriter or two by inviting a handful of other performers to play the honoree’s songs onstage. This series, a fundraiser for The Warming House, happens with different honorees and different musicians every month. This month we celebrate birthday gal Gillian Welch and Minneapolis's own The Jayhawks. Performers include Andrea Sorum, Laura Hugo, Jessica Skilar, Brianna Lane, Zachary Scot Johnson, Erik Ostrom & James Rone (duo), and John Louis! Doors at 7:30, music at 8:00. Suggested donation is $5 - $20, and all proceeds go to support The Warming House, a tax-exempt music listening room.
Andrea Sorum
Andrea Sorum
A Minneapolis based artist, Andrea Sorum’s voice and songs are vulnerable, lilting, uplifting and genre-blending.
She was born to two rural pastors and an upright piano. Music was her first language and quickly became her creative outlet, spending hour in her room singing her poetic creations into a small cassette recorder. After completing her undergrad as a vocal and piano major she ventured to India where she volunteered with a nonprofit and recorded a full-length fusion album that was never released in the U.S. After returning to Minnesota she played in a couple bands before eventually retiring the guitar and songwriting to focus on raising a family. After the birth of her second son her mind again exploded with creative ideas. Her 2016 album, “American Dreams,” is full of the maternal love and energetic playfulness she has found as a parent. Now a single mom, a piano teacher and accompanist, she performs frequently in the Twin Cities and neighboring communities.
Jessica Skilar

Erik Ostrom

James Rone
James Rone
James Rone is the singer, guitarist, and songwriter for local band School For Girls, whose debut album, All At Once, was released in 2016. Rone previously performed in local R&B band The Robinson Caruso Organization and performs his solo improvised singer-songwriter show, Troubadour, at music and improv venues in Minneapolis. His songs blend lucid storytelling with abstraction, all in the service of melody.
John Louis
John Louis
John Louis is a Minneapolis-based singer-songwriter and guitarist who crafts twangy folk songs about love, loss, living and nostalgia.

“I think of my music as tonic from the chaos and swirl. Music for the road, or the kind of songs you sing with friends around the fire,” said Louis. His songs evoke hope and longing, change and regret, love and death, lost and found, and kindness.

Collectively, Louis says he’s been influenced by all of the music he has ever heard, but is especially fond of that long list of singer-songwriters that begins with Kris, Townes, Lucinda, Bob, Waylon, and Gram. “I am drawn to songwriters who are serious about their craft, but who make themselves vulnerable -- who from time to time put big pieces of their heart and soul into their songs.“ It is through these influences that John has put big pieces of his own heart and soul into his songs.
While Louis has written songs and played music with other musicians for many years, the release of Drift in September 2015 marked his first record as a solo singer/songwriter. Louis wrote the bulk of Drift in late 2013 and 2014. The album was recorded and mixed at Underwood Studio in Minneapolis with producer Mark Stockert and co-producer Brianna Lane. Mastering was performed by Pete Lyman of Infrasonic Mastering in Los Angeles.

For Drift, Louis pulled together some of the most gifted musicians around: Mike “Razz” Russell (fiddle, mandolin, guitar); Jimmy Johnson (pedal steel); Brianna Lane (banjo, vocals); Michelle Kinney (cello); Jed Germond (fiddle); Andy Carroll (bass); and Kris Schaefer (drums). Louis provides lead vocals and guitar to every track. The album also features gorgeous vocals by notable musicians Page Burkum and Jack Torrey (Cactus Blossoms), and Ben Kyle (Romantica).

When not playing music or writing songs, John can most often be found on a bike or listening to other musicians around town.
